Living in Texas, we are all well aware of the vast numbers of insects and spiders living alongside us, in our homes, gardens, and lawns. Some can be toxic to the touch while other kinds can be quite helpful because they eat other harmful insects. Knowing what kind of pests can enter your house and lawn area can be useful in getting rid of harmful ones and how to react when you're caught in a bug situation.

The debate over just how individuals, institutions, professional societies, and scientific publications should divulge potential conflicts of interestand indeed just what constitutes a conflictshows no sign of abating. Across the spectrum of interests, people are asking whether efforts towards transparency are truly helping advance the cause of healthcare and medical innovation, and what, if anything, could be done better.

Asthma is a chronic condition that causes your airways to constrict, making it difficult to breathe. Asthma is a serious illness; its also very common, and millions of individuals throughout the world suffer from it. And the number of sufferers climbs continually.
Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with the disease are able to relieve their symptoms through various forms of asthma treatment. It can be controlled to a point where they are able to live quite normally and not suffer from constant asthma attacks.
Treatment
Your best approach is to prevent an asthma attack from occurring in the first place. Find out the specific triggers for your symptoms and stay away from them. Still, there will be instances when youll experience asthma symptoms no matter what you do. This means that learning to manage your asthma symptoms is vital.
Bear in mind that not all asthma attacks are alike. At times, your symptoms might be more severe than others. During a severe attack the airways can become so constricted that they prevent your vital organs from receiving the oxygen they need. This is considered to be a medical emergency. Even death can be a result of a serious asthma attack. If youre one of the millions of people who suffer from asthma, its important that youre aware of the seriousness of this condition.
Pharmaceuticals
Generally, medication is the preferred way to deal with asthma attacks. It can help asthma sufferers keep their condition under control and ward off an attack before it becomes serious. Asthma medications can be taken orally or inhaled in vapor form using a metered dose inhaler.
There are two kinds of medication available for treating the problem. A bronchodilator will help out by keeping spasms in check. Anti-inflammatory medications reduce airway inflammation. If your asthma is particularly severe, your doctor may suggest that you use a combination of both.
These days there is a variety of prescription treatments that you can try:
*Accolade and Singulair, which are leukotriene inhibitors
*Serevent and Famoterol, long lasting bronchodilators, and
*Theophylline or Aminophylline.
Your physician will be able to advise you which asthma remedies are best for you.

The Many Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide
By Dr. David G. Williams
http://educate-yourself.org/cancer/benefitsofhydrogenperozide17jul03.shtml
Posted July 17, 2003
(Original title: Hydrogen Peroxide Curse or Cure?)
When it comes to hydrogen peroxide therapy there seems to be only two points of view. Supporters consider it one of the greatest healing miracles of all time. Those opposed feel its ingestion is exceptionally dangerous, and only the foolhardy could think of engaging in such behavior. Before either condemning or endorsing hydrogen peroxide, lets take a real close look at what were dealing with.
If any substance is interesting, its hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide should really be called hydrogen dioxide. Its chemical formula is H2O2. It contains one more atom of oxygen that does water (H20). By now everyones aware of the ozone layer that surrounds the earth. Ozone consists of three atoms of oxygen (03). This protective layer of ozone is created when ultraviolet light from the sun splits an atmospheric oxygen molecule (02) into two single, unstable oxygen atoms. These single molecules combine with others to form ozone (03). Ozone isnt very stable. In fact, it will quickly give up that extra atom of oxygen to falling rainwater to form hydrogen peroxide (H202). (Bear with me: all this chemistry mumbo jumbo Im going through actually will help you understand the importance of hydrogen peroxide.)
Helps Plants
It is this hydrogen peroxide in rainwater that makes it so much more effective than tap water when given to plants. With the increased levels of atmospheric pollution, however, greater amounts of H202 react with air-borne toxins and never reach the ground. To compensate for this, many farmers have been increasing crop yields by spraying them with diluted hydrogen peroxide (5 to 16 ounces of 35% mixed with 20 gallons of water per acre). You can achieve the same beneficial effect with your house plants by adding 1 ounce of 3% hydrogen peroxide (or 16 drops of 35% solution) to every quart of water you give your plants. (It can also be made into an excellent safe insecticide. Simply spray your plants with 8 ounces of 3% peroxide mixed with 8 ounces of white sugar and one gallon of water.)
Hydrogen peroxide is odorless and colorless, but not tasteless. When stored under the proper conditions, it is a very stable compound. When kept in the absence of light and contaminants, it dismutates (breaks down) very slowly at the rate of about 10% a year. (This can be slowed even further by storing the liquid in the freezer.) It boils at 152 degrees C and freezes at minus 2 degrees C.
When exposed to other compounds hydrogen peroxide dismutates readily. The extra oxygen atom is released leaving H20 (water). In nature oxygen (02) consists of two atomsa very stable combination. A single atom of oxygen, however, is very reactive and is referred to as a free radical. Over the past several years, weve continually read that these free radicals are responsible for all types of ailments and even premature aging. What many writers seem to forget, however, is that our bodies create and use free radicals to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In fact, the cells responsible for fighting infection and foreign invaders in the body (your white blood cells) make hydrogen peroxide and use it to oxidize any offending culprits. The intense bubbling you see when hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with a bacteria-laden cut or wound is the oxygen being released and bacteria being destroyed. The ability of our cells to produce hydrogen peroxide is essential for life. H202 is not some undesirable by-product or toxin, but instead a basic requirement for good health.
Newer research indicates we need hydrogen peroxide for a multitude of other chemical reactions that take place throughout the body. For example, we now know that vitamin C helps fight infections by producing hydrogen peroxide, which in turn stimulates the production of prostaglandins. Also lactobacillus found in the colon and vagina produce hydrogen peroxide. This destroys harmful bacteria and viruses, preventing colon disease, vaginitis, bladder infections and a host of other common ailments. (Infect Dis News Aug.8,91:5). When lactobacillus in the colon or vaginal tract have been overrun with harmful viruses, yeast, or bacteria, an effective douche or enema solution can be made using 3 tablespoons of 3% H202 in 1 quart of distilled water. Keep in mind, however, that a good bacterial flora must always be re-established in theses areas to achieve lasting results.
Aerobic versus Anerobic
While we are discussing enemas and douches, there is another misconception about H202 I need to address. The friendly bacteria in the colon and vagina are aerobic. In other words, they flourish in high oxygen environments and thrive in the presence of oxygen rich H202. On the other hand, most strains of harmful bacteria (and cancer cells) are anaerobic and cannot survive in the presence of oxygen or H202. We can agree that hydrogen peroxide produced within individual body cells is essential for life. And no one doubts its effectiveness when it comes to treating infections topically. The controversy deals with ingesting the substance orally or introducing it into the body intravenously. The dispute has been going on for decades, and considering the attitude of our medical community, it will continue for many more decades to come.
Ill admit I was skeptical when I first learned about using H202 orally or intravenously. This healthy dose of skepticism, however, lead to a great deal of investigation, clinical work and experimentation. And while I realize a large majority of readers will probably never be convinced that H202 is a safe and effective compound, I am. Hydrogen peroxide is safe, readily available and dirt cheap. And best of all, it works! No one yet fully understands the complete workings of hydrogen peroxide. We do know that it is loaded with oxygen. (A pint of the food-grade 35% solution contains the equivalent of 130 pints of oxygen. A pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide found at the local drugstore contains 10 pints of oxygen. And a pint of the 6% solution used to bleach hair contains 20 pints of oxygen.) We also know that when H202 is taken into the body (orally or intravenously) the oxygen content of the blood and body tissues increases dramatically. Early researchers felt these increases were simply due to the extra oxygen molecule being released. This doesnt however, appear to be the case.
Only very diluted amounts of H202 are ever introduced into the body. The small amount of oxygen present couldnt be solely responsible for the dramatic changes that take place. Dr. Charles Farr, a strong proponent of intravenous use, has discovered another possible answer. Dr. Farr has shown that hydrogen peroxide stimulates enzyme systems throughout the body. This triggers an increase in the metabolic rate, causes small arteries to dilate and increase blood flow, enhances the bodys distribution and consumption of oxygen and raises body temperature (Proceedings of the International Conference on Bio-Oxidative Medicine 1989, 1990, 1991).
Father Richard Willhelm
We are just beginning to learn exactly how H202 works. It was reported to work as far back as 1920. The English medical journal, Lancet, then reported that intravenous infusion was used successfully to treat pneumonia in the epidemic following World War I. In the 1940s Father Richard Willhelm, the pioneer in promoting peroxide use, reported on the compound being used extensively to treat everything from bacterial-related mental illness to skin disease and polio. Father Willhelm is the founder of Educational Concern for Hydrogen Peroxide (ECHO, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public on the safe use and therapeutic benefits of hydrogen peroxide.) Much of the interest in hydrogen peroxide waned in the 1940s when prescription medications came on the scene. Since that time there has been little economic interest in funding peroxide research. After all, it is dirt cheap and non-patentable. Even still, in the last 25 years, over 7,700 articles relating to hydrogen peroxide have been written in the standard medical journals. Thousands more, involving its therapeutic use, have appeared in alternative health publications. The number of conditions helped by hydrogen peroxide is astounding. The reported dangers and side effects are few and often conflicting.

A New Fad or Steeped in Ancient History?
You may be new to using alternative medicine or perhaps you have already seen the amazing benefits alternative medicine and alternative therapies can bring to your life. But do you know how long its been practiced and where it originated? Well let me take you on a journey into the fascinating history of alternative medicine.
The history of Alternative Medicine is an interesting one and has links with many different cultures. However its difficult to say exactly when Alternative Medicine began, in part because up until recently the practices that fall under this term were the conventional medical practices of their time.
But if we go back in history and trace several of the forms of healing that are now labelled as alternative we find that their origins go back as much as 5000 years. From Eastern Philosophy to Widely used Western Alternatives.
One of the oldest forms of alternative medicine can be traced back through Chinese history. The ancient Chinese, in much the same way as alternative medicine is used today, based their healing on the importance of the body and spirit being in balance. Much of the philosophy of Chinese Medicine is based on Taoist and Buddhist principals and the belief that a person and their environment are closely interlinked.
The widely known principles of Yin and Yang come from Chinese Medicine and are integral to its practice. Yin and Yang explains how opposing forces are integral to each other and how for harmony within the body to take place, these must be in balance. When these are out of balance, disease occurs.
Chinese Medicine works at restoring balance in various ways including herbal medicine, acupuncture, breathing and movement (Tai Chi and Qigong) and also through diet. The practitioner looked at the patients health and life in detail to ascertain where their life force or Qi (pronounced Chi) was out of balance. Various methods would then be used to restore the patient back to health.
Such was the effectiveness of Chinese Traditional Medicine that it still forms a large part of modern health care in the East. Its not unusual for these practices to be used in hospitals alongside western medicine.
The other Eastern Culture that has a long history of alternative medicine is India.Ayurvedic medicine dates back as far as 6000 years ago and like Chinese Medicine also has links with Buddhism.
Ayurveda comes from 2 Sanskrit words Ayu meaning life and veda meaning knowledge of. It is a system of medicine that keeps a persons body, mind and spirit in tune with nature in order to maintain good health.
When in Rome ..
In the West, the History of Alternative Medicine goes back around 3000 years. Treatments such as hydrotherapy were popular with the Romans and Greeks. The Ancient Greeks who were greatly influenced by the Babylonias and to a lesser extent by India and China brought herbalism into the West. Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BC), a Greek physician commonly referred to as the Father of Medicine, practiced herbal medicine.
During the Middle Ages, Monks in Europe studied and grew medicinal plants and translated many works on the subject from Arabic. Folk Healers also passed on their knowledge of healing through word of mouth, from Master to Apprentice.

The understanding of the power different plants have is ingrained in many native civilisations and has allowed man to understand and thrive in often challenging environments. When the Europeans settled in America they found that the Native Americans had an extensive knowledge of the healing power of their indigenous herbs. Likewise the Aborigines in Australia understood the power of plants found in their environment.
Moving forward in time towards the 19th Century, before the rise of Western Medicine, as we now know it, medical practitioners were more like todays naturopaths. They would take a detailed medical history paying particular attention to the patients lifestyle. They would then suggest ways to improve this by changes in diet, environment and would also prescribe herbal remedies.
How a Bit of Mould Turned the Tables on Alternative Medicine
The widespread use of alternative medicine in its various forms decreased during the 20th Century. Treatment of patients became more focused on the use of hospitals, and developments in modern medicine lead to the widespread use of Pharmaceutical Drugs to treat disease. The discovery of Penicillin and its development into a drug that could treat bacterial infections in the 1940s revolutionised health care and alternative medicine lost favour with most medical practitioners.
Although many Doctors let go of what they considered to be outdated treatments such as homeopathy, herbalism and traditional Chinese Medicine many patients still sort them out, especially when conventional medicine didnt appear to be working for them.
No Longer An Alternative, Now Another Choice
for Achieving Better Health
The result now is that Alternative Medicine is on the increase. Practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and healing are kept alive by practitioners who specialise in one of more alternative form of treatment. Frequently alternatives are used alongside modern medical treatments, which have led to alternatives being given the term complimentary medicine.
This brief history of alternative medicine shows that many of the practices used today have been with us for thousands of years. Given the rising popularity of using alternative medicine to deal with health issues today, its likely that these practices will be around for many more.

Several documented cases of poisoning from Chinese Slimming Capsules have been reported.
Advertised over the Internet, the capsules are said to contain herbal supplements, and are classified as a food supplement rather than a drug.
A close examination of the formula contained in these capsules, however, finds that the active ingredient is sibutramine.
Sibutramine is similar to amphetamine. It inhibits the re-uptake of two important brain chemicals, serotonin and noradrenaline. The amount of sibutramine in the capsules is high, twice the daily maximum prescription dosage in Germany, where the poisoning cases were reported.
There were 17 total cases of poisoning reported, 15 in women and 2 in men. Poisoning symptoms included nausea, headache, agitation, insomnia, dyspnea and tachycardia. One of the men who took the capsules becomes psychotic.
One young woman who took the capsules suffered from acute confusion which required admission to a psychiatric inpatient facility. When the capsules were used in combination with other drugs, symptoms of poisoning were more severe.
Just because a product is marketed as “natural” does not mean it cannot also be harmful. If you are taking any herbal supplement, be sure to talk with your doctor about it to avoid possible drug interactions, and so that your doctor will know all possible causes for any side effects you may experience.

DO IT YOURSELF METHOD TO PROVE THE ARRIVAL OF SUPRAMENTAL FORCE ON EARTH
Method to Prove that whether the Supramental Force, Supreme Power, Comforter, next Prophet or Kalki of Christians, Jews and Hindus has already arrived on Earth or Not.
It may sound mind blowing to scientific minded people, surprisingly this method is especially for the Scientist and Intellectual Community of the World, who experiment and scrutinize every new concept before believing it, yes, and we must be able to prove it ourselves before believing or accepting it.
Yes; it is a complete and more advanced science than the modern science says Guru Siyag, capable of giving on the spot results just like modern science. Of course it was limited to myths, stories, faith and belief till today, because we were not able to prove it as a factual subject, it was regarded as a mere baseless theory. Guru Siyag has proved it to be a Practical Science; he has discovered and disclosed a new formula or Practical experimental Method, using this Method every Positive minded curious Human Being of the World can himself do this experiment to realize and visualize the truth of spiritual science, leading to spiritual evolution and holistic healing. Guru Siyag has proved that using Siddha Yoga method of Meditation; one can get rid of even the so called incurable diseases like cancer, AIDS, Arthritis, Insomnia, and Mental Stress and so on. The Practitioner also gets rid drug and other addictions like alcohol, tobacco, Brown sugar, Morphine, Opium, Heroine etc. These results are nothing but the removal of hurdles in the way to complete development of Human Beings, to attain a Divine Bodily Form, in other words we can call it the journey from man to superman.
Another surprising Disclosure by Guru Siyag is the Method to prove whether the Comforter, Next Prophet or kalki Avatar of Christians, Jews and Hindus has already arrived on Earth or not, yes we can test the truth about presence of that supramental force on earth. It takes only 15 to 20 minutes to experiment it, right now. The Method
1. Sit in a comfortable posture on the ground with crossed legs.
2. Close the eyes and concentrate on the Forehead between the Eyebrows.
3. Make a Mental Prayer to that Supramental Force, saying that if the Comforter, Prophet or Kalki is Present on Earth, then I must get the proof, if the Supramental Force is Present on Earth, then I must go into automatic (Kundalini controlled) Spiritual Meditation for 15 or 20 minutes.
4. After this mental prayer start continuous mental repetition(Chanting) of any one sacred word of your choice(God, Jesus, Allah, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, etc.,) in the mind without moving lips or tongue, simultaneously keep concentrating on the forehead between the eyebrows.
5. Continue this process and within a few minutes you will be induced by automatic spiritual meditation, might even hear and see visualizations during this state of meditation.
6. Dont panic if your body starts moving automatically during this process, these are the Yogic body movements (Real Yoga is induced automatically by inner spiritual power Kundalini), required to free the body from physical, mental and spiritual diseases of all kinds, these will stop automatically after 15 or 20 minutes, and you will come out of spiritual meditation into normal state.
7. To get complete results and benefits, it has to be practiced regularly in the morning and evening at any convenient time, empty stomach, before having food.
8. The time taken to get the results is totally dependent on our Positive approach and curiosity to realize the truth.
9. No barriers of Race, Religion, Cast, Country or Gender, no rules and no regulations.

By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer Erica Werner, Associated Press Writer – Sat Mar 28, 10:01 pm ET WASHINGTON – Ever wonder how that bill was calculated if you had to pay to see a doctor outside your insurance network? Might be a scam, says a senator investigating the issue. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, wants answers at a hearing Tuesday from the chief executives of UnitedHealth Group Inc. and its subsidiary Ingenix Inc., a claims database used by insurers nationwide to calculate out-of-network rates.
The inquiry follows lawsuits and an investigation by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo alleging that UnitedHealth and Ingenix manipulated rate data so insurers had to pay less and patients more for out-of-network services. re lowballing deliberately. They deliberately cut the numbers so the consumer has to pay more of the cost, Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday.
s scamming. Its fraud, he said. In January, UnitedHealth agreed to pay $350 million to settle a suit by the American Medical Association and others over the issue. UnitedHealth did not admit wrongdoing. But, under pressure from Cuomo, the company agreed to pay $50 million toward creation of an independent claims database and eventually close down the Ingenix databases. Cuomo has secured similar agreements from other major insurers, including WellPoint Inc., Aetna Inc., and Cigna Corp. The AMA is pursuing suits against those companies, too. Our view is that weve reached a resolution on this matter and were moving forward, UnitedHealth spokesman Tyler Mason said in a voicemail message Friday.
We think its positive that this information will continue to be made available in the health care marketplace so that people can make informed decisions. A spokeswoman for Ingenix referred calls to UnitedHealth. Rockefeller and other lawmakers, along with doctors and consumer groups, view the matter as far from over. They say more accountability and transparency is needed in how insurance companies determine out-of-network rates, and that patients need to understand how its done to avoid sticker shock when they get their medical bills.
One such patient is Mary Jerome of Yonkers, N.Y. She went out of network to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006. When she began getting her bills she discovered that Memorial Sloan-Kettering was not being reimbursed by her insurer anywhere near as much as the center was charging and that she was responsible for paying the rest. I had to battle cancer — and I am still battling it — and I had to battle my insurance company to try and get fair coverage, Jerome told Rockefellers committee in written testimony.
More than 70 percent of workers who get health care through their employers are enrolled in plans that allow them to go out of network, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Typically, those plans will pay a set percentage, say 70 percent, for an out-of-network visit. But unknown to many consumers, when patients go out of network, their plan doesnt actually pay 70 percent of the doctors visit cost. It pays 70 percent of what it determines is the usual, customary and reasonable cost for the procedure or doctors visit in question.
Insurance companies determine that cost themselves or use figures from a database of their choosing, and theres scant regulation or oversight of how they do it. In the case of UnitedHealth and Ingenix, they were allegedly manipulating claims data so that the usual, customary and reasonable costs they used were lower than they should have been, leaving patients to pay more. Cuomos office said Ingenix was understating the market rate for doctors visits across New York state by 10 percent to 28 percent. A spokesman for the insurance industry group Americas Health Insurance Plans blamed doctors for high out-of-network bills.
Consumers would be shocked if they knew the exorbitant rates that some nonparticipating providers charge, Robert Zirkelbach said. He declined to respond to allegations that insurance companies knowingly under-reimburse, citing the pending litigation. Even with the UnitedHealth settlement, lawmakers and others want bigger changes in the system so rate calculations are fairer and better understood. Rockefeller said federal legislation might be needed. You ask me how are their usual and customary rates being determined? Rockefeller said. I dont know.S NOTE
As a provider that provides some out of network care, I constantly fight with Insurance companies to pay a fair share of what they are billed for my patients.  This seems to be a step in the right direction for making health care more affordable and fair for everyone.

We all suffer from headaches from time to time. There is an easily accessible acupressure point that can help relieve headache pain, especially if your headache is located toward the front of your head as with sinus headaches.
This point, known as Large Intestine 4 or its more lyrical name “Joining the Valley,” is located in your hand, in the web between your thumb and index finger, at the point just above where your carpal bones meet.
To use this point for headache pain relief, squeeze it gently but firmly using the thumb and index finger of the opposite hand and hold for about 2 minutes.
If you try this point in each of your hands, you may find that this point is tenderer in one hand than the other; if that is the case, try squeezing the point in the hand that is most sore. Some people also find applying ice to this point can help relieve headache pain.
Stimulating this point has been shown to help alter our bodys response to pain. In addition to headache relief, this point can also help with toothache, shoulder pain and nausea. Stimulation of this point may also help with depression, and help balance the digestive system.

Marriage is a funny thing.  How you view it is drastically different if you are a teenager or youth with stars in your eyes compared to your vision of marriage when you have been ensconced in the practice for 20-30 years and looking toward a life in retirement as a married couple.  Baby boomers have experienced every aspect of marriage from that early idealistic stage through divorces, various redefinitions of marriage and now taking their marriages into their retirement years.  It may be that this next transition of marriage will bring as many changes to that special relationship as any that have gone before.
How you view marriage as you move toward your retirement years without a doubt depends on how marriage has gone for you over the decades.  If marriages are rocked with difficulty, separations and other woes, retirement can bring a new dimension to that tension.  On the other hand, part of the commission of retirement is to begin to seek resolution of life’s struggles so working together with each other in the context of marriage can bring tremendous healing in this phase of life.
Each era of life seems to bring a new opportunity to define marriage and how it will be an important part of life.  When the baby boomer generation became parents, the shift was notable as retailers responded to their emphasis on being good moms and dads and away from youthful issues to some extent.  Then as baby boomers moved through parenting and into the empty nest phase of life, that seemed to bring as many challenges as when that nest filled up with children decades before.
There is no question that real life in the context of a very real and functional marriage, even with the problems that brings is also a huge resource for us throughout life’s journey.  While sometimes the romance can escape from the marriage relationship if life brings struggles and as our bodies go through changes, that partnership and intimacy of relationship is an incredible resource for coping with the big changes all baby boomers have had to face over the years.
This is the good thing about hanging in there with that marriage until you get to the stage of life most baby boomers are moving toward in this decade.  The things that can rob a marriage of romance during the working part of your married years are the coming of children, the hard work of raising them, keeping a career moving forward in the tough business settings we have experienced in the last three decades and seeing your own relationship evolve under that kind of “pressure cooker” environment.
But a significant amount of those pressures begin to lift when you are able to perhaps scale back the work life, enjoy the fruits of your labors and let the kids get out on their own.  So that side of the pre-retirement years can actually be a fertile setting for a new romantic life between husband and wife to spring up.  Many couples, as they leave the world of parenting behind, experience such late in life romantic rebirths.  And this kind of late springtime in your relationship with your long time spouse can bring the birth of new creativity in many parts of your life making it one of the happiest phases of life for you and your husband or wife.
A marriage gets tested throughout youth and middle age and marriages that survive do so because of mutual support and the ability to accept the other member of the marriage and compromise.  Since these traits will be well established in your relationship as you move into your fifties and sixties together, they will be a continuous resource to you as you face retirement issues, dealing with being a grandparent and being wise counsel for children who are facing life’s struggles for the first time.
But baby boomers should not be surprised if they see their marriages continue to change, grow and mature in new directions as each partner explores this phase of life for the first time as well.  A marriage is a living thing so we can take joy from seeing it become something new each new decade as, as we have done often in the past, we start defining marriage all over again.

I'm a medical technologist and medical writer with more than 30 years experience working in hospital laboratories. Currently, I work as a hospital laboratory supervisor in Colorado. I have a B.S. in Chemistry/Medical Technology from the University of Toledo, and I attended graduate school at the University of Colorado. My websites include: Elaine Moore Graves' Disease and Autoimmune Disease Education and my Author's Guild Profile.
I'm also a Graves' disease patient and patient advocate and the author of the following books: Autoimmune Diseases and Their Environmental Triggers; Graves Disease, A Practical Guide; The Encyclopedia of Alzheimer's Disease; Thyroid Eye Disease, Understanding Graves' Ophthalmopathy; The Encyclopedia of Sexually Transmitted Diseases; and Hepatitis, Causes, Treatments and Resources. My latest book, which I wrote with MS patient advocate Sammy Jo Wilkinson, The Promise of Low Dose Naltrexone Therapy was published in Dec, 2008. For patients and their physicians as well, it describes the role of LDN in HIV infection, autism, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, Lyme disease, various cancers, and other infections.
When I was first diagnosed with Graves' disease, I rushed into aggressive treatment despite having mild symptoms. This I regret because my thyroid gland was the victim rather than the cause of my illness. So while I understand why some patients panic and want to rush into the first treatment, they hear of, this is not something I recommend. The goal of treating autoimmune diseases, cancer, and other chronic inflammatory conditions is to heal the immune system and restore its naturally healthy functioning.
As a patient advocate and educator, my goal is to educate and empower both patients and healthy people interested in maintaining their good health. Patients need to learn about the natural course of their particular condition, the environmental triggers that exacerbate their condition, the substances and factors that promote healing, and the role of laboratory results. Above all, patients need to understand the pros and cons of all treatment options, both conventional and alternative, as well as the role lifestyle factors play in the healing process. Disease prevention can never start too early. Stress reduction techniques and self-care are a sound basis for any wellness program. Why not make the benefits provided by spas the first step in your healing journey.

When you think of candles you automatically think of the candles burning in the living room or the bathroom. The candles for Hopi Candling are different.
Hopi candles are hollow in the middle of the tube and are made by aged methods. There are essential oils used with honey to make the candles and the popular essential oils are chamomile, St. Johns Wort and Sage. The other ingredients which make up the ingredients are bees wax and linen.
The people of Greece, North America and Egypt are well known for using this ancient healing method.
Hopi is used all over the world and therapists use this method in their healing clinics.
Method:
The ear has an amount of rubbish which needs to be drawn out and the candle is the chimney and the tool to draw out the rubbish to clear the ear.
The candle is lit and the heat increases the blood circulation and boosts the body’s immune system.
Pressure in the nasal area of the face has an amount of pressure until it brings relief.
Note: a qualified therapist will ensure there is no candle near to the ear to burn the skin.
The overall effect of a Hopi candle treatment is relaxation and calmness
Note: there is no danger of the ear being burnt during a session from a qualified practitioner. The effect is so relaxing with the warm heat that client is usually reluctant to sit up after the treatment has been completed.
Warning: If the pain in the inner ear persists then consult a doctor.

If you read my last article, you know that I have been living with back pain for quite a few years. It has been on and off and for the most part; acupuncture and a good chiropractor have kept me in working order.
Since I was feeling so good, I decided to play some basketball with some guys from work. Well, I landed a little awkward after going up for a shot and really wrenched my back. I kept playing for awhile (yeah, I know; not a good idea) thinking that it would work itself out. Of course, it didnt. It just got worse and when I went and laid down to ease the pain I found I couldnt get up.
I made it home and took a bunch of ibuprofen; I have never taken any hard pain meds and dont ever want to have to do that. Since this pain was worse than ever I decided I needed to try something new. I had heard about the Vax-D Therapy before and even seen commercials on TV. I decided to look them up and give it a go. I have been getting the Vax-D treatment now for 3 weeks and feeling much better; but let me tell you what you can expect from the whole process.
First, you can expect not to be relieved from pain right away. I could not get in until 4 days after my injury and that was only for an initial exam. They did however get me right into an MRI which was just next door. They were booked pretty solid and they scheduled me for the Vax-D therapy starting in about 10 days. During this time, I went to my chiropractor for my usual treatment on the Cox table to get me by. The Vax-D plan seems to be universal and not tailored to a persons specific needs. By this I mean that everyone gets 20 treatments it seems. My schedule was every day for 2 weeks, then Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 2 weeks and then Tuesday and Thursday for 2 weeks. This is combined with physical therapy which is primarily the Cox excercises. On my first day, they did an EMG (I think thats what it is called) to test for any nerve damage. I have heard some horror stories about these nerve tests where they place needles into you to get to the nerve but this one was done using contact strips on the skin. It was, however, a little painful. Then it was on to my first round of physical therapy and then the Vax-D treatment.
So I was about to embark on this new treatment but I didnt have a strong comfort level with the personal attention to my case. I think the physical therapists have seen so many people with the same problems that all seem to get better from the VaxD that they just view it as a panacea and forget to take the time to explain everything to every new patient. Hopefully this article will help you out in this area! The VaxD table is simply a flat table with grips on one end and a pulley on the other. The table also slightly slides backwards underneath you to aid the stretching. The assistant will place a strap around your hips/waist to attach to the pulley and you grip the other end of the table. If you are too tall (as in my case) they will put a harness under your arms and hook the harness up to the grips. The session will last around 25 minutes and the machine will gradually pull a little harder. It is a strange feeling and you will probably feel like either trying to pull against it or move around a little, but I think the best thing is to stay as relaxed as possible. The machine gradually pulls on you for about a half a minute and then slowly releases back to normal. This repeats for the rest of the 25-30 minutes. Since I am using the harness on the top side I have nearly fallen asleep a few times.
It has been 3 weeks since my first Vax-D treatment and how am I feeling? Well, after the 3rd session I was feeling quite a bit better and then for some reason after the 4th session I felt a little worse. Then in the second week I started feeling better again. The main problem I was having was when I stood up after sitting for a long time. Now after the 3rd week I am actually feeling great. I would guess it is probably normal to waiver in the first few weeks. I feel like the best thing for me to do now is to keep up the physical therapy on my own even though I am not going to the back institute every day.
Well, I hope this has helped if you are thinking about getting VaxD treatment or if you are having severe back pain and unsure what to do. I will write more as I experience it!
If you havent read it yet here is my article on Acupuncture and Chiropractic.

2. Role of collagen in your anti aging wrinkle cream
Across Japan, a growing number of restaurants, devoted to serving collagen on their menu. Dishes which are naturally rich in collagen are pigs trotters, shark fin and chicken. Japanese people attempt to keep young but eating collagen is no more effective an anti-aging method than consuming any other protein-rich food.
Collagen is essential to maintain the skin firm, and therefore prevent wrinkles. But it does not work when applied topically, as the collagen molecules are way to big to be absorbed by the skin. What most creams dont do is tell you just this. But there are some, such as Revitol anti aging wrinkle cream that contain ingredients known to stimulate the skins own production of collagen.
3. Role of elastin in your anti aging wrinkle cream
Elastin loss leads to decreases in the flexibility, strength and healing ability of skin; eventually thin, sagging and easily injured and bruised skin results. Elastin loss also leads to a reduction in the vitality of hair follicles in the scalp. A great anti aging wrinkle cream should that stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, with the help of special and natural ingredients.
Most creams have elastin in the ingredients list, to be applied topically. But elastin applied topically cannot replace a depleted elastin supply in the skin. Some of the products containing elastin may temporarily cause the skin to appear younger because the skin is properly moisturized.
4. The role of sun screens
Exposure to the UV sunlight causes wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and even skin cancer. 90% of all visual aging characteristics like fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, spots, are now more and more linked to sun exposure. Therefore a anti aging wrinkle cream that is also a sunscreen can protect you by blocking the UV from damaging your skin.
5. Good, healthy eating and drinking habits
Antioxidants can help in wrinkle prevention, as they neutralize external forces (such as damage from the sun, pollution, wind, and temperature) and internal factors (for example, emotions, metabolism, and the presence of excess oxygen).
Exercise experts are now revising their definition of to reflect that aging for most people equates to inactivity. Today, thanks to high-tech sports medicine and rehab advancements, men and women in their 90s and 100s are regaining strength and mobility from muscle training. The take-home lesson: its never too late to start exercising, but getting a jump start while youre still agile is best.
To prevent wrinkles is good to have a diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid smoking (a major cause of free-radical buildup). Vitamins A, C, E, and beta carotene are most common antioxidants, and they assist in skin repair and the strengthening of blood vessels. You can get antioxidants by eating plenty of foods with antioxidants, by taking supplement pills and also by applying anti wrinkle creams that contains them. This is very powerful, and if you use it combined with an anti aging wrinkle cream, it is better.
A number of reputable scientists have been personally consuming antioxidants for years. Dr. James Jessup at the University of Florida found that older men and women who exercised regularly and took vitamin E supplements became healthier and significantly decreased their levels of free-radical induced oxidative stress, a known contributor to aging and disease. Remarks Dr. Jessup: The results of this study suggest that people who are over 40 can benefit from regular moderate exercise and vitamin E to protect their aging bodies.
Is an anti aging wrinkle cream a preventive measure?
Yes, it can be. Imagine visibly erasing past damage the evidence of sun exposure, dark patches, age spots .
Always look for the right ingredients, to make sure the anti aging wrinkle cream you picked is the one that works..

National Historic Chemical Landmark for their three decades of work in this area. (Sadly, they received none of the profits from these drugs as their discoveries pre-dated the Bayh-Dole Act that allowed NIH funded researchers to share in the revenues of intellectual property emerging from their work.).
Being a savvy young investigator, I sought and enlisted the assistance and support of Dr. Wall and colleagues to provide my team with world-class, natural products expertise. Stunningly, the subsequent application was awared a score of 345 (*much worse than the original) with the criticism from reviewers that all Dr. Wall did was to lend a drug development aspect to an otherwise applicaton.
To this day, I cannot fathom who better I could have sought for natural products expertise on this grant application.
Since then, three of my colleagues and I have submitted 13 applications to NCCAM, including an application for a comprehensive Botanical Research Center grant. All 13 received unfundable scores. Among these was a 279-page application for a NCCAM Botanical Research Center - reviewed but not discussed by the evaluation panel.
Nonetheless, I have taken the approach that if NCCAM were to continue its existence, I would try to be part of the solution.  I have accepted several invitations to review research and training grants for NCCAM and I am pleased to say that one or two projects that I ranked highly ended up being very productive, specifically in the area of natural products and traditional herbal medicines.  I also have some friends and valued colleagues who contribute to the scientific integrity of NCCAM. However, my collective experiences lead me to believe that they are voices quenched by the vast wilderness of the promotion and advocacy of integrative medicine and CAM.
